A brief history of the area
Franschhoek was originally known as the valley of the Huguenots. In 1685 the French Huguenots fled from their homeland when Protestantism was outlawed in France. In 1688 the refugees were granted land by the Dutch government and began establishing farms and businesses. Many of the settlers named their farms after the areas in France from which they came. Today, most of these farms still retain their original Cape Dutch farmhouses.
