Mokopane at a glance

Mokopane is one of South Africa's richest agricultural areas with the production of wheat, tobacco, cotton, beef, maize, peanuts and citrus fruit. It is home to one of the largest citrus farms in the southern hemisphere, Zebediela Citrus Estate. The area is conveniently located in the Waterberg Region of the Limpopo Province and is en-route to Botswana, Zimbabwe and the Kruger National Park.

A brief history of the area
In 1852, the area was named Vredenburg by the Voortrekkers (Dutch settlers or of their descendants) but was renamed in 1858 to  Pietpotgietersrust, in honour of Piet Potgieter, who had been fatally wounded in the Makapan Cave attack. 

In 2003 the name was once more changed, this time to Mokopane in honour of the local chief Makapan, who came from a line of great Kekana chiefs.

Mokopane lies 1150m above sea level and has a local steppe climate. The average temperature in Mokopane is 19.3 °C. January is the hottest month of the year with an average temperature of ±30 °C, while June is the coldest month, with temperatures averaging ±22 °C. The average annual rainfall is 495 mm, with the lowest in July averaging 1 mm and January averaging 94 mm.
