Nelspruit at a glance

The vibrant city of Nelspruit is the provincial capital of Mpumalanga. It is one of the major South African tourist destinations, due to its proximity to the world-famous Kruger National Park. Now called Mbombela, the city is situated on the banks of the Crocodile River in the heart the Lowveld.

The city plays host to many cultural and agricultural shows annually. They include The Lowveld show, Lowveld Agri show, Innibos Arts festival, Nelspruit Motor Show, as well as the Colour Run.

A brief history of the area
Nelspruit was founded in 1895 by three brothers of the Nel family who grazed their cattle around the site during the winter months. In the late 19th century the Netherlands-South African Railway Company built the Eastern railway making the settlement a key stopover. Further development of the area was encouraged with the discovery of gold in the region at places like Pilgrim's Rest and Barberton.

In October 2009, Nelspruit was renamed to Mbombela.

Climate
The lowveld has a subtropical climate as a result of its latitude and proximity to the warm Indian Ocean. The average midday temperatures for Nelspruit range from 21.4°C in June to 27.9°C in January. It is the coldest during July when the mercury drops to 6.2°C on average during the night. Nelspruit normally receives the lowest rainfall (2mm) in June and the highest (119mm) in December.

There are two airports available in Mpumalanga. Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport is 27km away from the city centre with a travel time of 27 minutes. The driving distance from Nelspruit Airport is around 9km to the city centre, which will take you roughly 10 minutes to reach with an average speed of 80km/h.
