History

Krugersdorp was founded in 1887 by Marthinus Pretorius. Following the discovery of gold on the Witwatersrand, the government purchased a portion of the Paardekraal farm to meet the need of a town west of the reef. Paul Kruger, the president of the Transvaal, was the inspiration for the town's name. 

Krugersdorp, along with adjacent communities, is now part of the Mogale City Local Municipality. In and around Krugersdorp, gold, manganese, iron, asbestos, and lime are still mined.

Krugersdorp has a moderate and temperate environment, with an average annual temperature of 16.1 °C. January, at an average temperature of 20 °C, is the hottest month of the year, whilst the average winter temperature in July is 9,7 °C. There is substantially less rain in the winter than there is in the summer.

The OR Tambo International Airport is 20 kilometres from Krugersdorp. This route will take 49 minutes via the N12 at an average speed of 80km/h.

The Krugersdorp Game Reserve is the place to go if you want to see the famous "Big Five". The 1400 hectare area is home to 15 mammal species and offers guests a full African safari experience by vehicle or horseback. If you're terrified of the ferocious lions, don't worry: they're kept in a 100-acre enclosure amid the reserve.

Bungee Mogale

The Bungee Mogale is an adventure centre located near the Kings Kloof Bridge. If you're feeling courageous, you can try a 50-meter bungee, swing on a bridge, or fly down the 320-meter foofy slides. If you want to walk, you can do it along the suspended Burma Bridge. You could also enjoy the adventure circuit or unwind at the restaurant and bar.

Cradle of Humankind World Heritage Site

If you are interested in fossils and learning about the past, a trip to the Cradle of Humankind World Heritage Site is a must. It's only a 30-minute drive to the Maropeng Visitor Centre, Wonder Cave, and Sterkfontein Caves, which house some of the world's earliest hominid fossils. You may also take a boat ride and educational tour of the Tumulus structure in Maropeng before touring the caverns where the 2-million-year-old Mrs Ples skull was discovered in 1947.
