Somerset West Central at a glance

Helderberg is a wine-producing area near Cape Town, formerly known as the Hottentots-Holland area. The area gets its name from the Helderberg Mountain, (clear mountain in Afrikaans) because of the way in which the Western side of the mountain is illuminated in the evenings. 

Helderberg is mainly made up of Somerset West, Strand, Gordons Bay and a few other towns. Somerset West is considered as the business hub of the area, Gordon's Bay a holiday destination, and Strand is an impeccable place for retirement. 

Somerset West has become the commercial and residential capital of Helderberg. The town features historic buildings with delightful features to cater to exquisite boutiques that sell wine, flowers, chocolates, books, fabrics, jewelry, antiques, and more.

Gordon's Bay was originally named Fish Hoek. The town has a blue flag beach, Bikini Beach, situated to the south of the harbor. It is popular with students from the nearby University of Cape Town and Stellenbosch University. 

With great views of the Cape Peninsula, Strand's safe and mesmerizing white sandy beaches are the perfect setting for tranquil living. This seaside resort town was founded in 1714 and originated as a holiday and fishing village. The Lourens River mouth and up to Rooi Els is still very popular with beach fishermen and rock anglers.

Helderberg has a warm and temperate climate. The average temperature is 16.2 °C. January averages around 21.0 °C, while July averages at 11.7 °C. The rain in Helderberg averages 801mm with rainfall occurring mostly in the winter, with relatively little rain in the summer. The average in January is 18mm and 124mm in June.

If you are travelling from the Cape Town International Airport to Somerset West you would drive 31kms (23-minutes) via the N2, 34km (28-minutes) via the N2 to Strand, and 43km (36-minutes) to Gordon's Bay also via the N2.

Special Attractions
Gordon's Bay is popular for its windsurfing, surfing, and braai activities. Visitors enjoy a stroll along the harbor wall which allows them to see the yachts and boats leave and enter the protected marina. If Gordon's Bay is too busy for your liking then Melkbaai, Strand's Bikini beach and Main beach are great alternatives. Here visitors enjoy swimming, sunbathing and walks the beach. Surfers can also head out to nearby Kogelbay.

If it is wine you are after, then the Helderberg Wine Route is a must see. The vineyards line the slopes of the Helderberg, sharing both a mountain and maritime climate resulting in world class bottles of wine ranging from a 300-year old historical manor winery to art boutique wineries route.

Fun for the whole family, the Helderberg Nature Reserve offers great picnic spots and exciting hiking trails overlooking False Bay. Several Bontebok, squirrels and the occasional tortoise can also be seen here.
