Brits at a glance

Surrounded by serenity and grandeur, the large town of Brits is rich in agriculture and several heavy industries. This fertile area boasts citrus, vegetable, and grain which are irrigated by the waters of the Hartbeespoort Dam in North West Province.

Brits also forms part of the Platinum Belt since 94% of South Africa's platinum comes from the Rustenburg and Brits districts. In addition, there is a large vanadium mine in the area.

A brief history of the area
The first European to build a pioneer hut in the area was Albertus Venter, who in 1840 settled down with his wife and daughter on the farm which is today known as De Kroon. The Fourie family soon joined Venter and eventually bought the farm from him. They put up the first permanent homestead that became known as the "Ou Werf".

Brits was named after Johannes Nicolaas Brits as it was founded on his farm, the Roode Kopjes (Red Hills) in 1924. 

Brits was once home to the Italian car manufacturer Alfa Romeo whose factory produced cars for the domestic market and export to Asia from 1974 to 1985.

The climate in Brits ranges from 19.8°C in June to 29.3°C in January. The region is the coldest during July when the mercury drops to 2.1°C on average during the night. Brits get about 540mm of rain per year, with most rainfall occurring during mid-summer. It receives the lowest rainfall (0mm) in June and the highest (105mm) in January.

Pilanesberg International Airport is 87-km away from the center of Brits. This journey will take a 76-minute drive via the R556 with an average driving speed of 80km/h. Brits Airfield also mainly facilitates light and ultra-light aircraft as well as Gliders.

Botlhabelo High School, Hoërskool Brits, Hoërskool Hartbeespoort, Laerskool Brits, Laerskool Olienpark, Laerskool De Kroon, Laerskool Vissershoek, Laerskool Sandrift, Hoërskool Wagpos, Modikwe Primary School, Bakwena Secondary School, Thornhill Primary School, Academy Christian School, Lighthouse Christian College, Central Secondary School, and Odi Primary School are great schooling facilities in the area.

Brits District Hospital, Mediclinic Brits, Krishna Medical Centre, Netcare Akasia Hospital, Madibeng Main Clinic, Oukasie Clinic, Letlhabile Community Clinic, and Jericho Clinic are good places to visit if you are in need of medical attention.

The single-level, air-conditioned Brits Mall is the first regional shopping center in the greater Madibeng Local Municipal area. It boasts close to 90 shops with three entrances and approximately 2000 free parking bays. 
Other notable shopping zones include Lethlabile Mall, Spar Complex, Safari Centre, Magalies Centre, and Brits Value Centre.

Eateries such as the Stokkiesdraai Restaurant and Equestrian Centre, Family Fish and Chips, Homestead, Rustic Crystal Yard, Sapphire Blue, as well as the national favourites; KFC, Nandos, Steers, Wimpy, Fisherways, and Debonairs Pizza can be found in Brits.

Special Attractions
Situated in the small town of De Wildt, just east of Brits, the De Wildt Cheetah and Wildlife Centre is renowned for its success in breeding and studying cheetah, king cheetah, brown hyena, blue duiker, and wild dogs. Visitors can experience guided tours with the opportunity to experience the thrill of watching a cheetah run at high speed, or observe how these amazing animals live. 

The beautiful Borakalalo National Park boasts an incredible array of plant and animal life. Visitors can marvel at 350 bird species, leopard, white rhinoceros, giraffe, zebra, gemsbok, sable, and a selection of other graceful antelope.
