The earliest evidence of modern human habitation in Centurion dates back to 1200 AD. It is also known that black African communities settled in the area and cultivated lands, grazed their cattle, made earthenware containers, and melted iron.

The town of Irene was established in 1902 after the famous Boer Wars. Centurion developed from the initial Lyttelton Township in 1904. It was only in 1962 that Centurion was granted City Council. This was formed by combining the areas of Doornkloof, Irene and Lyttelton.
