A brief history of the area
Jeffreys Bay was named after Captain Jeffreys who sailed his cargo ship up and down the East Coast of South Africa on trading expeditions in the 1840s. He was forced to land his vessel during one of these trips because of an epidemic of scurvy which broke out aboard his ship. He realized the potential of the area that he had landed and soon built a primitive port. Jeffreys erected the first house - a huge double-story mansion known as "The White House" in 1850.

In the late 1960s and early 1970s, the town was known as a hippie hangout.
