The suburb of Waterkloof is named after and located on the original farm that was founded in the 19th Century. Translating to "Water Rivine", Waterkloof was associated with the Afrikaner elite as several government officials of high rank made their home here during the apartheid regime in South Africa. The suburb further bears the imprint of the British Empire as many of its streets are named after British royalty.

Waterkloof's hottest months fall between October and February, with maximum temperatures of 28°C to 30°C. Minimum temperatures in summer are generally between 16°C and 18°C. Winter has an average minimum of 5°C and a maximum of approximately 19°C. The suburb gets most of its rainfall in summer, with January being the wettest month.
