Witbank at a glance

The city of Witbank is a city situated on the Highveld of Mpumalanga, South Africa, within the eMalahleni Local Municipality The name Witbank is Afrikaans for "white ridge" and is named after a white sandstone outcrop where wagon transport drivers rested. On March 3rd, 2006, Witbank was officially renamed eMalahleni, meaning 'place of coal', in reference to the area's coal-mining heritage.

Witbank is located along the railway line linking Pretoria to Maputo which once served as the transport gateway to the Mozambique port.

A brief history of the area
Witbank was established in the 1890s when about 20 underground mines were operating. From coal mines, it became a town and soon progressed to being named a city. The progress moved forward at an immense pace due to the quality of the coal and the establishment of a power station and steel mill.

This led to more investors flocking to Witbank because of the coal, and the town grew into a city. As a result of the jobs created by the growth of the heavy industry, the demand for real estate property began to soar.

The town has grown since then from a farming community into a business destination where huge companies such as Anglo American, Eskom, SAB Miller, and SAMANCOR have found substantial returns on their investments.
