A Town Steeped in History
Nestled among striking klip-koppies, Colesberg is a town rich in heritage and natural charm. Established in 1830 on the site of an abandoned London Missionary Society station, it was originally named Toverberg after the nearby Coleskop hill. It was later renamed in honor of Sir Galbraith Lowry Cole, Governor of the Cape Colony (1828–1833).
The region’s history stretches from Stone Age hunter-gatherers to trekboers, missionaries, and the farming communities that followed. Colesberg was declared a district in 1837 and became a municipality in 1840.
Today, the town is celebrated for its fertile farmland, scenic Karoo landscapes, and distinctive koppies. Generational farms in the area are renowned for producing high-quality Merino wool, Dorper sheep, and horses, supported by irrigation farming along the Seekoei River.
Colesberg Lodge offers investors not only a thriving business opportunity but also the rare privilege of owning a piece of South Africa’s heritage in one of the Karoo’s most captivating towns.
